About Artist
Mohamed Abdelkarim was born in al-Minya, Egypt, in 1983.
After completing his master’s thesis in 2014 at Ecole cantonale d’art du Valais in
Switzerland, Abdelkarim turned toward producing text-based performances and became committed to performative practices across multidisciplinary research concerning the perception of narrating, singing, dancing, detecting, and doing.
His practice engages with these actions through a focus on travel, locomotion, renegades of history, and picaresque literature, where a series of nonlinear, serendipitous encounters with concepts, fictions, almost-truths, and what are known as historical facts, are gathered to form a script and archive of events and stories. In this context, his practice aims to produce narratives and expose the way narratives are produced.
As part of his performative practices, Abdelkarim established Tadbikat as a performative project that brings together (and synthesizes across) lectures, debates, group (close) readings, critical responses, and creative quests, alongside organized performance nights under the title of Live Praxes.
Abdelkarim’s work tackles subjects such as tourism, religion, politics, and economics. He has been featured in a number of group exhibitions, including PhotoCairo, Contemporary Image Collective (Cairo, Egypt 2012); Cairo-Documenta, Hotel Viennoise (Cairo, 2012); Thessaloniki Biennale (Greece, 2011); A Survival Guide, Sharjah Art Gallery, American University in Cairo (2010); and the Slovakia Film Festival (Bratislava, 2009). Abdelkarim has performed at Tokyo Wonder Site (Japan, 2012); Kunst Halle St Gallen (Gallen, Switzerland, 2011); and Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (Karachi, Pakistan).
